Church of the City / PIB New Jersey

Purpose: A world transformed by love through compassionate people, living in authentic community

World

Church of the City / PIB New Jersey feels God’s calling to the whole world. While our early growth will likely focus in communities that speak Portuguese, English and/or Spanish we believe that our message of love needs to be heard across the globe.

“Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name

of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to

obey everything I have commanded you.” – Matthew 28.19-20

Transformed

Church of the City / PIB New Jersey shall be salt and light in every community where God calls us (Matthew 5.13-16). By so doing, we shall change the fundamental elements of this world in a way that honors God – Arts & Entertainment, Business, Education, Family, Government, Media, and Religion.

“’You are the salt of the earth. But if the salt loses its saltiness, how can it be

made salty again? It is no longer good for anything, except to be thrown out

and trampled underfoot. You are the light of the world. A town built on a hill

cannot be hidden. Neither do people light a lamp and put it under a bowl.

Instead they put it on its stand, and it gives light to everyone in the house. In

the same way, let your light shine before others, that they may see your good

deeds and glorify your Father in heaven.’” – Matthew 5.13-16

“For this is what the Lord has commanded us: ‘I have made you a light for the

Gentiles, that you may bring salvation to the ends of the earth.’” – Acts 13.47

The English word “transform” comes from the Greek “metamorphóō” (μεταμορφόω), which is a combination of “metá,” meaning “change after being with” and “morphóō,” meaning “changing form in keeping with inner reality.”

“Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the

renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s

will is—his good, pleasing and perfect will.” – Romans 12.2

Love

Church of the City / PIB New Jersey loves Christ and expresses Christ’s love through service and by placing other’s needs above our own.

“Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all

your mind and with all your strength.’ The second is this: ‘Love your neighbor

as yourself.’ There is no commandment greater than these.” – Mark 12.30-31

“Do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit. Rather, in humility value

others above yourselves.” – Philippians 2.3

“Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not

proud. It does not dishonor others, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily

angered, it keeps no record of wrongs. Love does not delight in evil but

rejoices with the truth. It always protects, always trusts, always hopes,

always perseveres.” – 1 Corinthians 13.4-7

“And over all these virtues put on love, which binds them all together in

perfect unity.” – Colossians 3.14

Compassionate People

Church of the City rejoices with those who rejoice and mourns with those who mourn (Romans 12.15). The English word “compassion” comes from the Greek “splagchnizomai“ (σπλαγχνίζομαι) means “to be moved in the inward parts.”

“Therefore, as God’s chosen people, holy and dearly loved, clothe yourselves

with compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness and patience.” – Colossians 3.12

Living

Church of the City / PIB New Jersey is not a building or a service, but people living life together in small groups and great celebrations.

“Day after day, in the temple courts and from house to house, they never

stopped teaching and proclaiming the good news that Jesus is the Messiah.” – Acts 5.42

Authentic Community

Church of the City is a group of genuine but imperfect people. Together we can celebrate our uniqueness and share life.

“Accept one another, then, just as Christ accepted you, in order to bring

praise to God.” – Romans 15.7

  1. Christ-centered truth

Jesus Christ is our Lord and Savior. While fully man and fully God, Jesus came to earth to die for the sins of the world. God’s word, The Bible, is our north star and will always orient our life and actions.

  1. Founded by one nation for all

The roots of Church of the City / PIB New Jersey are found in Primeira Igreja Batista de Língua Portuguesa, a Brazilian Baptist church founded in Elizabeth, NJ in 1993. While our Brazilian heritage is very important to us, Church of the City / PIB New Jersey welcomes all nations so that together we can live in community.

  1. Patiently growing together

Each day, our community grows individually and in greater numbers. We are ever seeking to reach the man or woman God created us to be. We recognize that this growth can be slow and painful and will patiently walk alongside one another.

“The Lord is not slow in keeping his promise, as some understand

slowness. Instead he is patient with you, not wanting anyone to perish, but

everyone to come to repentance.” – 2 Peter 3.9

  1. Relevancy drives influence

Church of the City / PIB New Jersey packages truth in accessible forms that are relevant to today’s realities. Technology, music, the arts, etc. are all important mediums for reaching the world. Through this relevancy we want to positively influence everything and everyone.

  1. Joyful Celebration

In spite of the challenges of life, Church of the City / PIB New Jersey always has a cause for celebration because we have tasted an unconditional love that makes our hearts sing.

“Clap your hands, all you nations; shout to God with cries of joy.” – Psalms 47.1

“Every day they continued to meet together in the temple courts. They broke

bread in their homes and ate together with glad and sincere hearts, praising

God and enjoying the favor of all the people. And the Lord added to their

number daily those who were being saved.” – Acts 2.46-47
